It’s back to basics with Chef John Wilson. Chef John will teach basic cooking techniques in a variety of American, European and international cuisines. Classes will be held in the kitchen of Historic Barrington Hall. Join us for an evening of culinary fun and camaraderie. You’ll leave with some pretty useful cooking skills in the bargain. Prepare a complete meal under Chef John’s hold-your-attention instruction and dine in the spacious kitchen of this historic home.Barrinton Hall

Ideal for couples, gift giving, or just an opportunity to hone your cooking skills. $50 per person, per class includes lesson, food, wine, and loads of fun. Reservations are required as space is limited.

Roswell Commemorates 10th Anniversary of 9/11

The City of Roswell invites you to join us for a very special event, Roswell Remembers 9/11, on Sept. 11, beginning at 8:30 a.m. at Roswell City Hall. The City in conjunction with the Roswell American Legion, Veterans of Foreign Wars, and the Roswell Rotary Club will be hosting the event to commemorate the 10th anniversary of the terrorist attacks on the United States.

Roswell Remembers 9/11 will bring together firefighters, law enforcement, military, and civilian representatives to memorialize and commemorate the anniversary of this event. Distinguished guests, elected officials, and a wreath-laying accompanied by a color guard and bagpipers will highlight the service.

The service will be followed by a Remembrance Walk to the Warrior Service Center where a remembrance celebration will take place. The one-mile walk through historic Roswell to the Center will provide an opportunity for reflection and solidarity for the courage and sacrifice that has been and continues to be made on behalf our nation. The Remembrance Celebration, beginning at noon, will include an open house at the Center, lunch from the grill, static military displays, and children’s events.

Aurora Cineplex Roswell GAIt’s hard to believe it’s been a full year since Aurora Cineplex and The Fringe miniature golf took over the space that used to be home to Startime Entertainment. Yet, a year has indeed passed, and tomorrow, Sunday, July 31, 2011, the family fun center is celebrating their one year anniversary with a huge party.

Beginning at noon and lasting until 6:00 p.m., customers can enjoy buy one, get one free on most everything Aurora Cineplex and the Fringe have to offer. The few exclusions include future movie passes and candy. Other than that, take advantage of the BOGO opportunities on day-of movie tickets, popcorn, drinks, games of miniature golf and much more. In addition, there will be live music, cake, face painting, moonwalks, balloon art and more.

Roswell eventsThe Roswell Police Department, along with Roswell Target stores would like to invite all Roswell residents to join us on Tuesday, August 2, 2011 from 7:00 P.M. – 9:00 P.M. for National Night Out. This FREE event will be held at the Roswell City Hall grounds located at 38 Hill Street. There will be plenty of food, drinks, and prizes. There will also be police vehicles, fire equipment, and games for the kids.

This enjoyable National event is designed to strengthen our communities by encouraging neighborhoods to engage in stronger relationships with each other and with their local law enforcement partners. The goal is to heighten crime-prevention awareness, build support and participation in local anti-crime programs, and most importantly, send a message that our neighborhoods are organized and fighting back. It’s also the perfect opportunity to get to know your neighbors even better.

Roswell Drinking Water FestivalHappy Drinking Water Week! Yes, Drinking Water Week is this coming week, May 1, 2011 through May 7, 2011. The City of Roswell celebrates this week each year with a festival filled with fun activities for the whole family. They use the festival as a unique opportunity to recognize the vital role that safe, clean water plays in our lives.

So, come out to the Cecil Wood Water Plant, located at 100 Dobs Drive, on Saturday, May 7, 2011 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. At the festival, you have the opportunity to take a tour of the water plant and learn how water gets from rivers, lakes and other sources to your faucet.  Other drinking water-related activities include a water taste test, leak detection tips and more. In addition to the water-based festivities, kids can jump in the driver’s seat and honk the horn and push other buttons during touch-a-truck. Also, enjoy food, refreshments and giveaways. And, if you are looking to go above and beyond just educating your kids, then head over to the Chattahoochee Nature Center on Saturday, April 16, 2011 for Earth Day Kids Fest.

This is a unique and exciting hands-on environmental edu-tainment fest where youngsters are encouraged to take the first steps in becoming environmental stewards. Through engaging activities and performances, kids are energized with empowering information, allowing them to lead the way in preserving and protecting the planet. They can even meet Captain Planet, and if he can’t give give them the power to protect the planet, then no one can. Some of the day’s highlights include:

  • Interactive booths and exhibits from over 30 local groups and environmental organizations
  • Environmental themes such as clean water and air, wildlife and habitat protection, native plants, water conservation and recycling while finding ways of taking green steps to a new level in your home and business

Enjoy the Annual Lighting of the Historic Roswell Square

Christmas LightsOne of Roswell’s most anticipated events, the annual lighting of the Historic Town Square, is taking place this Saturday, December 4, 2010. Not only will you get to enjoy the beautiful illumination of the Christmas tree and other decorated structures, but this is also the perfect opportunity to visit Santa and ensure you are not on his naughty list.

In fact, the evening is packed full of different ways to celebrate the holiday season. The festivities begin at 5:00 p.m. with performances by the Hillside Elementary singers, the River Eves Choir and Esther Jackson Chorus. After singing along with these exceptional performers, you can then enjoy a special reading of ’Twas the Night Before Christmas from Mayor Jere Wood.

Roswell Chili Cook-off

The Roswell Chili Cook-off will be held from 2 to 4 p.m. on October  23rd at Leita Thompson Memorial Park. The Chili Cook-Off is currently accepting registrations from local cooks until October 1st. Complete the online registration form at www.roswellgov.com/chili.

There is no entry fee required and participants should comply with the following:

Chili:

Participants should supply at least 3 gallons of chili. Creativity with your recipes is encouraged. All bases (beans, meat, veggie, etc.) are valid.

Participants must submit an ingredients list. No lists or recipes will be given out unless you would like to share. This cook-off involves sampling by event attendees, please be aware that liability is based on ingredients cooked in your chili. Anyone preparing and serving harmful ingredients will be held liable. Any non-traditional or unusual ingredients must be disclosed to prevent allergic reactions (seafood, peanuts, chocolate, etc.)

Chili should be prepared and heated before 2 pm on October 23rd. Chili must be prepared and served in a sanitary manner.

General Info:

Participants must furnish their own cookware and serving utensils.

A heat source can include a number of different methods including traditional propane camp stove, Coleman fuel, or BBQ (no electricity or running water will be available in the booths.)

Sides and Supplements: (Cornbread, bread, salsa, cheese, etc.) are optional but encouraged to support your chili.

Set-up Rules and Times:

All Participants will be allowed to set up no earlier than 12:30 p.m.

Advertisement and decoration are encouraged.

At the close of the event, all equipment, advertisements, and decorations must be removed from the site, but should remain until 4 p.m. and no longer than 5:30 p.m.

Shelter, chairs, and 6’ folding tables will be supplied.

One ounce sample cups, spoons, and paper napkins will be supplied.

Prizes for both categories (professional and amateur) include:

  • First Place – $100 + Large Ceramic Bowl;
  • Second Place – $50 + Large Ceramic Bowl;
  • Third Place – Ceramic Bowl.

If you just plan on attending the event and tasting the chili, cost is $20 and includes:

  • A beautiful handmade ceramic bowl of your choice made by the Clay Collective group
  • All the chili you care to taste!
  • A voting ballot– to vote for your favorite chili
  • $5 worth of tickets that can be used to purchase additional items such as drinks, baked goods, hayrides, pumpkin decorating, and MORE!
