Bring One for the Chipper

Join the tradition and give a gift to nature this holiday season!  Keep Roswell Beautiful invites you to celebrate the 22^nd annual “Bring One for the Chipper” and recycle your Christmas tree after the holidays.

As part of a statewide effort to reuse Christmas trees, Keep Roswell Beautiful has joined with sponsors The Home Depot, 11 Alive, The Davey Tree Expert Company, Keep Georgia Beautiful, Ferry-Morse Seed Company, Kiwanis Club of Historic Roswell, Starbucks, and Super Target to sponsor the “Bring One for the Chipper” program.

Roswell residents are invited to bring their trees to one of the two Home Depot locations in Roswell on Saturday, January 7, 2011 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.  The two locations are on Holcomb Bridge Road in Holcomb Woods Shopping Center and Woodstock Road across from Publix.  Trees will be chipped into mulch and will be available for delivery to the public by Davey Tree.  Residents are asked to please not drop off trees prior to the 7^th of January.

In appreciation of their recycling efforts, participants will also receive seed packets courtesy of Ferry-Morse Seed Company, while supplies last.

Last year, more than 8,000 trees were collected in Roswell.

Rivers Alive, Georgia’s annual river clean-up, comes to North Fulton on September 24, 2011. Sponsored by Keep Roswell Beautiful (KRB), the clean-up will take place from 8 a.m.-11 a.m. followed by a cookout until 12:30 p.m. at Riverside Park. The event will be held rain or shine.

Georgia has more than 70,100 miles of rivers and streams that need your help to stay clean. Individuals, neighborhoods, scout troops, schools, churches, clubs and service organizations are being asked to pull together to make a difference for the Chattahoochee River. Cleanups of the Chattahoochee and surrounding areas will be going on in the week leading up to the event. Volunteers are also needed on the morning of this event for privet (invasive species) removal at Riverside Park and Chattahoochee Nature Center, as well as litter pickups in surrounding areas. Participants who own a canoe or kayak are encouraged to bring them to the clean-up.

All volunteers must have the Rivers Alive volunteer waiver form completed and signed before arriving at the event. The form is available at the Keep Roswell Beautiful website at www.keeproswellbeautiful.org.

The North Fulton cleanup is co-sponsored by KRB, the City of Roswell, the City of Alpharetta and the Chattahoochee Nature Center. Partners include SuperTARGET, Starbucks, Kiwanis Club of Historic Roswell, Windward Rotary, Ecological Solutions, Hal’s Drive Thru and Alpharetta Police Athletic League.

The polls are open in what could be one of Roswell’s most entertaining political elections. In an effort to generate even more awareness about the City of Roswell’s sustainability goals, City employees and residents are currently able to cast their votes and help decide who will wear green hair to a Council meeting in April.

In previous years, the “winners” were the two people who received the most votes. In a twist this year, the “winners” will be the two people who receive the lowest number of votes. This places more pressure on those nominated to fund-raise!

The voting began Friday, April 1. So, right now employees and residents can cast their “vote” for who should wear green hair. Each vote is only $1. Two people will be selected – one individual from Mayor & Council and one Department Director. Voting will take place from April 1 through April 21 (close of business).

The money raised through the Green Hair Challenge will be used to purchase CFL light bulbs that will be given to residents at a light bulb exchange. The City and Keep Roswell Beautiful are planning a giveaway event open to any Roswell resident and employee. Dates and times to be announced at a later date.

Looking to fulfill a quota for service hours? Well, Roswell needs volunteers to help restore the Big Creek Wetlands. Participants will be picking up litter, removing invasive species, planting new vegetation and restoring the wetland banks and water quality. This is a great opportunity to rack up some service hours while helping make Roswell a better and cleaner place to live. The Big Creek Wetlands provide an ideal setting for picnics, walks, jogs and fun days with the family.

The work day is scheduled for Saturday, March 5, 2011 from 9 a.m. to noon. If you register by March 1, 2011, you’ll get a free lunch during the day. Volunteers need to meet in the gravel parking lot off of Old Alabama Road (look for directional signage).

City of Roswell residents will be able to securely dispose of personal documents on Saturday, November 13th from 8 a.m. until noon (earlier if the truck fills up before noon) at the Roswell Public Works facility, 1810 Hembree Road. This free event even allows document destruction viewing to ensure safe disposal and peace-of-mind for participants.

Examples of sensitive documents include old tax returns, junk mail with personal information, dated documents with personal information, dated pay stubs with personal information, etc. There is a limit of five boxes or 200 pounds of paper per vehicle.

The event is sponsored by Georgia Document Destruction, Inc., the Roswell Recycling Center and Keep Roswell Beautiful.

Keep Roswell Beautiful and the City of Roswell have cancelled the Rivers Alive River Cleanup and Festival and the Great Annual Duck Race due to the storms that came through earlier this week. The events were to take place at Riverside Park on Saturday, September 26th.

Keep Roswell Beautiful is working on rescheduling the events.

Recycle those old light bulbs! The City of Roswell and Keep Roswell Beautiful (KRB), are planning a Light Bulb Exchange event open to any Roswell resident and employee on Wednesday, April 22 at City Hall from 3 p.m.-7 p.m. Please limit three bulbs per household.

According to the ENERGY STAR website, if every American home replaced just one light bulb with an ENERGY STAR qualified bulb, we would save enough energy to light more than 3 million homes for a year, more than $600 million in annual energy costs and prevent greenhouse gases equivalent to the emissions of more than 800,000 cars.

The Light Bulb Exchange is a first-time event and is a result of fundraising efforts through the Green Hair Challenge. The money raised through the Green Hair Challenge is being used to purchase compact fluorescent light bulbs and there is still time to cast your vote for Mayor and Council and/or a Management Team member!

Employees and residents can cast their “vote” for who should wear green hair. Two people will be selected – one individual from Mayor & Council and one from the Management Team. Voting will take place through April 15 (close of business) and can be done online through the KRB website (www.keeproswellbeautiful.org) or at City Hall in the Environmental/Public Works Department. Votes are $1 each. The person with the most votes will wear green hair.

The City is making great strides in its efforts to “go green” by working toward the Atlanta Regional Commission’s Green Communities Certification. The City has updated policies to include hybrid vehicles, began the process of an energy audit on City facilities and diversified the types of recyclables collected both curbside and at the Roswell Recycling Center.

Councilman Kent Igleheart is leading the City’s green efforts by heading up the Green Ribbon Committee and assisting with the City’s sustainability goals. “It’s important for Roswell to set an example by using new green technology and in moving toward more sustainable operations,” explains Councilman Kent Igleheart.
