The City of Roswell will host a public information meeting on the Historic Gateway Project December 1 from 5:30 p.m.-7:30 p.m. at First Baptist Church of Roswell, 710 Mimosa Boulevard in the Brantley Seymour Activity Building. Roswell residents, business owners and other stakeholders are invited to attend.

The City has already held three public meetings along with a public comment period on this project. During this meeting, the Historic Gateway team will respond to the citizen comments and questions presented at the September meeting and provide more detailed information on the two concepts the public has expressed interest in pursuing, including the concepts of dual-lane roundabouts and one-way pairs to minimize the impacts of an additional lane to remove the reversible lane system.

Questions on how roundabouts would work on Atlanta Street and what land uses could dwell between one-way pairs will be addressed, as well as additional data, drawings, cost estimates and greater design detail and visual simulations to help clarify the property, environmental and visual impacts and future traffic operations for each of the concepts.

Citizens attending will take part in reviewing and discussing the revised concepts with Project Team staff, and elected officials, as well as a presentation on how the concepts have been revised to address specific concerns.

The primary goal of the Historic Gateway Project is to make multimodal transportation and safety improvements along the Atlanta Street corridor that include the removal of the reversible lane system. A secondary goal is to improve operations and safety at the intersection of Atlanta Street and Riverside Road/Azalea Drive. A third goal is to improve the economic vitality of the area.

It’s the beginning of a new era in Georgia, where alcohol can be purchased 7 days a week. On Tuesday, November 8, 2011, 80% of voters checked “yes” for the Sunday sale of alcohol in Roswell, Ga. Since then, there has been much discussion on when the new law will take effect. Well, the wait is over as Fulton County has certified the November 8, 2011 election results. Therefore, Sunday alcohol sales begins this Sunday, November 20, 2011. Hours of sales are 12:30 p.m.-11:30 p.m.

Of course, you will want to check with your favorite package store to ensure that they will indeed be open on Sunday before you head out.

The Roswell Recycling Center is now providing Roswell residents with a way to safely and securely dispose of sensitive documents throughout the year by offering document shredding services. There will be a limit of two standard copy size boxes per vehicle per day. Total weight should not exceed 200 pounds.

Shredding will be done Monday thru Friday between the hours of 1 p.m. and 4 p.m. All documents should be removed from notebooks and binders. All paperclips, staples and other types of clips should be removed. Locked containers will be used to secure documents prior to shredding.

The Roswell Recycling Center is always considering new programs as a way to provide better customer service, to increase revenues and to keep materials out of the landfill. For more information about the service, available only to Roswell residents, please contact the Center at 770-442-8822.

Georgia Ensemble Theatre (GET) recently announced that it received a $260,000 grant from the Thoresen Foundation.

GET Board President Carla Crowell said the “grant gives new life” to GET, North Fulton’s only professional theater company and one of only a handful of metro professional troupes operating outside I-285.

“It provides the stability we need to enter our third decade of fulfilling the theater’s mission of captivating the current generation of theater-goers while, at the same time, nurturing future generations,”Crowell said in a statement.

The grant marks a sharp reversal of fortunes for GET, which in July 2009 launched an emergency fund-raising drive after running up a $100,000 deficit, the worst since its 1992 founding.

GET artistic director said the grant “enables us to plan for a bright and successful future. GET will continue to provide first-rate professional theater, arts education and community outreach throughout Georgia.”

The secret is out about Roswell’s historic treasure – Canton Street! The GPA award acknowledges that good planning has been crucial to preserving Canton Street and making it the vibrant “Great Street” it is today. Canton Street received this award because of the alfresco dining craze, being a walker’s dream street and for the people looking for “the Virginia Highland experience OTP, Canton Street has it covered.” According to the award application, ‘Historic commercial buildings and historic homes house restaurants, offices, retail and residential space. The Heart of Roswell Park provides a public park space in a historic commercial area and narrow streets with brick sidewalks and street trees provide character-defining elements that contribute to an enjoyable experience for all and provide the setting for a variety of experiences including shopping dining and festivals. Good planning has been crucial to making Canton Street a “Great Street in Georgia”! Citizens and visitors alike enjoy this historic and memorable sense of place.’

The Georgia Planning Association (GPA) is an official Chapter of the American Planning Association (APA). GPA is a 1,000-plus member organization of professional planners and planning officials who serve Georgia’s communities in many ways, at all levels of government, the private sector and not-for-profit organizations.

Roswell has been recognized by the Georgia Recreation and Park Association (GRPA) as having the best Recreation and Parks Department in the state! The Agency of the Year Award categories are based on population, and Roswell won in the Over 80,000 category. What’s truly remarkable is that Roswell has previously won the award eight times.

Roswell was recognized for providing quality programs and facilities. The City has done this consistently over the years by developing and updating its comprehensive master plan. Since the first master plan in 1968, public input has played a key role into what should be included and their priority.

In addition to updating the Master Plan this year, the Department also opened its second sprayground at East Roswell Park. Other notable accomplishments include installations of restrooms at Big Creek Park and Garrard Landing Park and a new sand volleyball court at Don White Memorial Park.

The exceptional parks and recreation facilities are just one of the many things that make Roswell such a great city to live.

Earlier this year, the City of Roswell put into motion the establishment of the Community Development Block Grant. Basically, this program funds city projects that benefit low to moderate income populations and has $400,000 to $500,000 annually to help these projects. Now that the city of Roswell has all of the logistics worked out, they are accepting applications through July 22, 2011 for local organizations to receive funding.

Nonprofit and governmental agencies that furnish measurable services to low- and moderate-income citizens within the City of Roswell are eligible to apply for funding. Applications can be found on the City’s website at www.roswellgov.com/cdbg. For additional information about the program, please call 770-594-6296 or email CDBG@roswellgov.com.

There is plenty of money up for grabs, so if you qualify for funding or know an organization that does, please encourage them to apply. The great thing about the Community Development Block Grant is that the money allotted goes directly back into the community, improving Roswell for all citizens.

There’s a new family fun center in town that promises to entertain kids of all ages, and their parents, too. Area 51 is located in the Roswell Town Center shopping center and includes an Aurora Cineplex movie theater and two 18-hole miniature golf courses.

The Aurora Cineplex showcases Hollywood’s latest blockbusters. Take advantage of some of the theater’s summer specials, include Matinee Tuesday, where you can enjoy matinee pricing all day long. In addition, Saturday and Thursday mornings host the summer family flicks, which are just $2 a ticket. You can get a list of the family movies playing this summer online.

Either before or after your movie, try your luck at a game of miniature golf at the Fringe. The facility has two different 18-hole miniature golf courses both entertaining and challenging, with sharp turns, hills and other obstacles to overcome. The average play time is 45 minutes.
