Nixle Roswell Alert System Roswell Notification Service

The City of Roswell has launched a new citizen notification service that will deliver important and timely emergency and general information to Roswell residents using the latest technology available.

What is Nixle?

The new notification service, NIXLE, will alert residents to emergency weather events, road closings, public safety advisories, natural and manmade disasters, and general city information through email and text messaging.

How Do I Sign Up?

NIXLE is free and is easy to register for through City of Roswell website. The button to sign up for the service is located on the right hand side of the City’s homepage. Those who wish to register will need to create an account with a user name and password, enter an email address and/or cell phone number where you would like to receive the messages, and then enter your address. Click the “Sign Me Up” button to complete the registration.

Currently, residents who register will receive alerts for weather events, road closing, and public safety advisories. Roswell will eventually provide general City information through NIXLE.

Please note that your cell phone provider’s text messaging rates will apply.

Roswell Attempts to Ban Smoking in City Parks

The city of Roswell is yet again doing something to help promote a more healthy lifestyle; proposing a ban of smoking in Roswell city parks.  Unfortunately, this plan has met a roadblock and the ban has been delayed.

The roadblock came at Monday night’s meeting when council members could not come to a decision as to the meaning of “private vehicle”.  The ordinance states that the only designated area where a resident can smoke is within a private vehicle.  Smoking RevoltThe confusion came when asked if bicycles and motorcycles were considered private vehicles.

Councilwoman Becky Wynn said, “We’re either going to have to ban smoking completely in the park, or we’re going to have to have designated areas in the park itself for smoking.”

Mayor Jere Wood suggested wording the ordinance to allow smoking in city park parking lots, however that was met with criticism because the ordinance’s goal is to promote a healthy attitude and many did not view permitting smoking in parking lots as a way to achieve this goal.

The ordinance originally was developed in response to complaints about residents smoking in the stands during children’s ballgames.

East Roswell Dog Park off Fouts Road

Yesterday, a friend of mine who also lives in Terramont subdivision asked me if I would like to join him and his dog at the Roswell dog park.  I assumed he was referring to the Mountain Park dog park, however he went on to mention the park being just a couple stoplights away from our neighborhood.  This prompted me to question him about which park he was referring to.

As it turns out, there is a dog park on the east side of Roswell.  If you are heading down Holcomb Bridge road towards Norcross, you will make a right turn at Fouts Road (just after Eves Road), the second or third driveway on the right is where you’ll want to turn.  The entrance is a gravel road with no sign marking the dog park so you’ll need to be alert.

The dog park is quite large with a fenced in area for both large and small dogs to mingle.  The day I went up to the park with Charlie I’d guess there were between 15-20 dogs at the park and around 10-15 people…everyone was being very social and talking with one another.  I even met another neighbor from the subdivision there!  It was really a great time spent at a place close to home…another reason why Roswell is such a great place to live!

ROSWELL – Dale Murphy, one of the most beloved Atlanta Braves ever, is coming to Roswell.

The Atlanta Braves legend will be speaking in the Roswell Stake Center of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints beginning Sept. 12 beginning at 6 p.m.

Murphy was a first round draft pick for the Atlanta Braves right out of high school in 1974. He played four seasons in the minors before coming to Atlanta.

During his time in Atlanta, Murphy set 13 franchise records, earned 5 Golden Glove awards, was chosen for 7 all star games, and was named National League MVP two consecutive seasons, 1982 and 83. His number “3″ was retired by the Braves in 1994 and hangs in Turner Field.

Since retirement, Murphy has kept busy with family, church, and charitable priorities. He served for three years, from 1997 to 2000, as president of the Boston Massachusetts Mission of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints.

Murphy supports numerous worthwhile charities as well as his own foundation “I Won’t Cheat,” which promotes ethics and educates young athletes about the dangers of performance-enhancing drugs.

He and his wife, Nancy, are the parents of eight children and grandparents of two.

Ten new communities were honored with the League of American Bicyclists prestigious Bicycle Friendly Community designation…none of with were located in the state of Georgia.  The city of Roswell remains to be the only city in Georgia to achieve this designation.

The five categories local and national reviewers look at are:

Education: Does the community have systems in place to train children and adult cyclists?
Engineering: Are bicyclists included in the city’s transportation plan?
Enforcement: Do police officers understand and enforce bicyclists’ rights and responsibilities?
Encouragement: Does the community participate in Bike Month, offer bike rodeos, host community bike rides, or otherwise encourage cycling?
Evaluation: Does the community have methods in place to ensure their bicyclist programs are making a difference?

Roswell is one of only 19 communities nationwide that renewed their bicycle friendly status.
