Roswell Has the Best Parks and Recreation in the State of Georgia

August 29, 2011 by

Roswell has been recognized by the Georgia Recreation and Park Association (GRPA) as having the best Recreation and Parks Department in the state! The Agency of the Year Award categories are based on population, and Roswell won in the Over 80,000 category. What’s truly remarkable is that Roswell has previously won the award eight times.

Roswell was recognized for providing quality programs and facilities. The City has done this consistently over the years by developing and updating its comprehensive master plan. Since the first master plan in 1968, public input has played a key role into what should be included and their priority.

In addition to updating the Master Plan this year, the Department also opened its second sprayground at East Roswell Park. Other notable accomplishments include installations of restrooms at Big Creek Park and Garrard Landing Park and a new sand volleyball court at Don White Memorial Park.

The exceptional parks and recreation facilities are just one of the many things that make Roswell such a great city to live.

NARI Tour of Remodeled HomesThe Atlanta Chapter of NARI (National Association of the Remodeling Industry) will present the Second Annual Tour of Remodeled Homes on the weekend of October 1st and 2nd. Homes throughout metro Atlanta that have been remodeled by NARI member organizations, three of which are located right here in Roswell, will be open to the public from 10 a.m. – 4 p.m. on Saturday and 11 a.m. – 5 p.m. on Sunday. All proceeds will be donated to the ALS Division of MDA (Muscular Dystrophy Association).

The three homes in Roswell showcase kitchen/laundry room renovations by CSI Kitchen and Bath Studio and main floor renovations from Distinctive Remodeling Solutions, Inc.

The CSI Kitchen and Bath Studio home is located at 3632 Childers Way. It is amazing to see the difference in the before and after pictures. CSI Kitchen and Bath was able to update the kitchen with state-of-the art features and appliances, as well as make it larger without adding on to the home.

Distinctive Remodeling Solutions, Inc. has two homes on the tour, both featuring main floor renovations. At 1365 Northcliff Trace, you can see how a 1980s kitchen, bathroom and laundry room were transformed from mid-century traditional to new-century sophisticated. 825 Saddlehill Road was given an open floorplan in order to expand the kitchen and allow it to seamlessly merge with the formal living spaces. Roswell Youth Day ParadeNow that the kids are back in school, we are all counting down the days until Fall gets here and we finally have a break from all of this heat. The good news is that with the new season comes one of Roswell’s most anticipated annual events, the Youth Day Parade. So, go ahead and mark your calendars for the 61st Annual Frances McGahee Youth Day Parade on Saturday, October 1, 2011 at 10 a.m.

A long-standing tradition in Roswell, Youth Day was started in 1950 by a group of concerned parents and has become one of the most successful events in City history. The City of Roswell celebrates Youth Day annually with a parade and festival. Typically the event is held on the second Saturday in October, but this year’s parade had to be rescheduled due to the Jewish holiday Yom Kippur. This event gives local youth organizations, such as scout troops, schools, dance and performing arts students, the opportunity to be recognized for their accomplishments. Each year, the event grows with even more floats, marching bands and spectators. Read more

For anyone interested in learning the art behind improv comedy, they offer classes as well as corporate training. And for those that would rather sit back and enjoy the comedy as opposed to be a part of it, Groupmind Productions has comedy shows every Saturday night. Beginning this Saturday, August 20, 2011, you can enjoy ANYTOWN: The Improvised Musical.

ANYTOWN starts simply, with an audience suggestion for the name of a small town in which everyone knows everyone. From there, the cast works with the audience to bring the tiny burgh to life, inhabiting it with a rich cast of colorful characters who sing, dance and act their way towards a dynamic conclusion. Filled with equal parts humor and heart, there are no props, no costumes, no set… only the  collective imagination of the audience and cast. In this musical comedy, anything is possible, and everything (including live musical accompaniment) is improvised. Read more

5:00 pmto8:00 pm

While there are countless advantages to living in the city of Roswell, traffic congestion is not one of them. On the plus side, the City of Roswell takes notice of problem areas and does what they can to help alleviate traffic. Next on the list of targeted areas is Holcomb Bridge and the stretch of asphalt that includes the GA 400 overpass. If this area is of particular interest to you, and if you commute to Atlanta every day it must be, then make plans to attend one of the upcoming public meetings. The first meeting is set for August 30 from 5p.m.-8 p.m. at the Doubletree Hotel, 1075 Holcomb Bridge Road in Roswell. It is the first of three planned public meetings.

During the meeting, city staff from the transportation department will present the project’s vision and goals, preliminary short-term transportation improvement concepts, and initial aesthetic concepts. The study area extends along Holcomb Bridge Road (SR 140) from Warsaw Road to Holcomb Woods Parkway and includes the interchange with SR 400. This particular project builds upon the Imagine Roswell 2030 Comprehensive Plan and the Big Creek Bridge Road Study completed in 2010.

As part of the outreach for this study, the City wants to hear from the public. Interested parties are encouraged to attend one of the public meetings. Yet, those who are unable to attend a meeting may visit www.roswellgov.com/hbr400 for further information and to take an online survey.
