Roswell Cycling EventsAs Georgia’s only officially designated bicycle-friendly city, it makes perfect sense that Roswell would fill an entire weekend with different cycling events. It’s still early enough in the year that the temperatures are not too hot, making it a perfect weekend to spend outdoors on your bike at the Roswell Cycling Festival. Most of the festivities will take place on Sunday, May 1, 2011, including the Roswell Criterium, Roswell Mayor’s Ride and Kids’ Bicycle Safety Rodeo, but mountain biking enthusiasts won’t want to miss the Big Creek Mountain Bike Trail activities scheduled Saturday, April 30, 2011.

On the Big Creek Mountain Bike Trails, experience 2 new pump tracks, one for beginners and the other for intermediate/advance riders. The pump tracks are small, circular courses with berms and rollers professionally built to teach kids and adults the skills necessary to safely participate in true off road trails. March for BabiesLet’s get moving Roswell and participate in the annual March for Babies, benefiting March of Dimes. For those unfamiliar with March of Dimes, the non-profit organization works to bring awareness about premature birth with hope of decreasing infant mortality. There’s no doubt premature birth is a serious problem. In Georgia alone, more than 400 babies each week are born too soon – before their lungs, brains or other organs are fully developed, and, as a result, thousands don’t live to celebrate their first birthday.

By supporting March of Dimes, you are helping to lower these statistics. So, go ahead and register for the March for Babies, scheduled for Saturday April 30, 2011. The 10K walk commences at the Roswell Municipal Complex – 38 Hill St., Roswell, GA. Registration begins at 9:00 am, with the walk following at 10:00 am. Of course, online registration is already open at marchforbabies.org.

Participation in March for Babies provides a memorable and rewarding experience for the whole family including local celebrity appearances, music, costume characters, face-painting and more. You can sign up as an individual, company or family team.

The March of Dimes Georgia Chapter aims to raise $5 million to support prenatal wellness programs, critical research and community grants, along with local resources such as the Angel II neonatal transport unit and Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) Family Support Programs. Let’s help them reach that goal!

Keep Roswell Beautiful’s Green Hair Challenge is Underway

April 1, 2011 8:00 amtoApril 21, 2011 5:00 pm

The polls are open in what could be one of Roswell’s most entertaining political elections. In an effort to generate even more awareness about the City of Roswell’s sustainability goals, City employees and residents are currently able to cast their votes and help decide who will wear green hair to a Council meeting in April.

In previous years, the “winners” were the two people who received the most votes. In a twist this year, the “winners” will be the two people who receive the lowest number of votes. This places more pressure on those nominated to fund-raise!

The voting began Friday, April 1. So, right now employees and residents can cast their “vote” for who should wear green hair. Each vote is only $1. Two people will be selected – one individual from Mayor & Council and one Department Director. Voting will take place from April 1 through April 21 (close of business).

The money raised through the Green Hair Challenge will be used to purchase CFL light bulbs that will be given to residents at a light bulb exchange. The City and Keep Roswell Beautiful are planning a giveaway event open to any Roswell resident and employee. Dates and times to be announced at a later date.
