Homestead Exemption Deadline is Fast Approaching

February 23, 2011 by

One of the easiest ways to save money as a homeowner is to apply for the homestead exemption. Basically, no one enjoys paying taxes and property taxes can reach some pretty high numbers. However, by applying for the homestead exemption, you automatically reduce your property taxes significantly as you are exempt from city operating, city school operating, city parks, state QBE and county operating taxes. It’s simple to apply; all you have to do is visit the Fulton County Board of Assessors and present a valid Georgia photo identification and provide a current copy of your Fulton County vehicle registration. The deadline is April 1, 2011 – so make this a priority on your to do list.

We’d also like to point out that Fulton County has increased the exemption amount from $25,000 to $30,000 for the 2011 tax year. The exemption automatically renews; so, if you are currently receiving the basic homestead exemption, you do not need to reapply unless there is a change of ownership on the property. The increased amount will be granted to homeowners who are currently receiving this exemption and to first-time applicants who qualify. To qualify for any exemptions, you must own and occupy the property as your primary residence as of January 1, 2011 and be a permanent legal resident of Fulton County. For more information on homestead exemptions, visit the Fulton County Board of Assessors website.

Roswell eventsRoswell bikers, it’s time to get political! Georgia Rides to the Capitol, a police-escorted bike ride from Roswell to the Capitol building, is only one month away, scheduled for March 22, 2011. The event is somewhat of a political protest as hundreds of metro Atlanta bikers storm the steps of the Capitol building voicing their opinions on relevant legislation. So, what are the bills in question for the 2011 legislative session?

For starters the “Three Foot Minimum Passing” law once again found its way on the agenda for this legislative session. The bill has been introduced this year as HB 180. As the title suggests, the law would require vehicles to pass bikers with at least a three foot cushion. 16 states already have safe passing legislation, and it’s time that Georgia became number 17. It’s time to take a night off of work, school and the rest of your daily stressors and immerse yourselves in the local talent of the Georgia Ensemble Theatre. The next play in the 2010 – 2011 season, Inherit the Wind, will be opening on February 24, 2011, and tickets are already on sale. This particular performance is one that you will not want to miss because Inherit the Wind happens to be one of the greatest epic plays of the 20th century.

Touching on many issues that are relevant in today’s society, Inherit the Wind is a fictionalized account of the 1925 Scopes “Monkey” Trial, which deals with the persecution of a Tennessee teacher covering evolution in a high school science class. At the heart of the play, you’ll find a debate on whether or not we even have the right to think for ourselves. As Americans aren’t we encouraged to celebrate our differences? Or do we push for conformity? Inherit the Wind digs into the heart and soul of America in a timely search for perspective and enduring hope. Read more

The work day is scheduled for Saturday, March 5, 2011 from 9 a.m. to noon. If you register by March 1, 2011, you’ll get a free lunch during the day. Volunteers need to meet in the gravel parking lot off of Old Alabama Road (look for directional signage).

New Construction in Roswell

February 10, 2011 by
Filed under Homes, Homes from $300,000, Neighborhoods

In the market for a new home in Roswell? There is no doubt that the current housing market is giving you a plethora of options and opportunities to purchase more home for your money. Even better, there is plenty of new construction that is just as affordable, and in some cases more affordable, than buying resale. One such example are the new homes being built in Stonewyck, a gated community of only 18 homes located off of Old Alabama Road near the Holcomb Bridge intersection. Originally, these homes were on the market for $800,000 or more, but the new construction from Sharp Residential is priced from the $360′s.

The neighborhood is currently accepting pre-sales, and you have your choice of 10 different floorplans, including the award-winning Briarcliff II floorplan. By purchasing during the pre-sale phase, you are able to customize the floorplan to fit your personal needs and style. However, with all of the options available, you more than likely will not need to amend the layout at all and will only be choosing the fine finishes and features you would like to see in your home.
